david steele bio

David Steele's interest in music and confidence as a singer began to grow as a young child, curled up in the family’s orange velvet rocking chair and letting the music of Curtis Mayfield, Janis Joplin, the Temptations, Neil Young and more, move him like nothing else he’d found.

He joined choir in high school on his brothers' advice of it being an easy credit and fun. “When I auditioned for the teacher, he said to me, 'Wow, you can sing, have you had any experience?’ I, being a typical teenage smartass, responded with something like ‘Well, I did some backup vocals on the Paul McCartney and Wings tour,’ which made the class laugh. That’s when I knew, okay, I can do this.”

After graduating, David joined different bands and eventually became lead vocalist and songwriter for Steele MacLeod and Prisoner, the band he formed with Brian “Too Loud" MacLeod of Chilliwack and Headpins fame.

Canadian singer-songwriter David Steele became one of the main session musicians in the west coast music scene through the decades, and has recorded with a multitude of top artists including Bon Jovi, Cher, The Cult, David Lee Roth, Bette Midler, David Foster, Mötley Crüe, Bob Rock, and Def Leppard, among others. He has also written and recorded music for film and TV (often with Trooper guitarist Steve Crane) from his home studio in North Vancouver.

David joined Trooper when founding member Ra McGuire announced retirement, prompting McGuire to share, "Holy Shit! David Steele is my favourite not-world-famous singer! I will be honored and proud to have him take my place!”

When he’s not songwriting or performing with Trooper, David can often be found scouring for vintage auto parts to keep his beloved '52 Chevy Panel Truck on the road.
