brian smith bio

One of the two founding members of Trooper, Brian Smith was born in 1949 in London, England and emigrated to Canada in 1951. He started guitar lessons at 14 and was playing professionally by 16. He graduated Vancouver City College with a degree in Arts and Merchandising but chose to become a "starving musician".

One of Canada's best loved guitarists and performers, he has also co-written several hundred songs, many of which became top 10 hits. He's received countless awards for his song-writing including the SOCAN National Achievement Award, and six SOCAN Classic Awards. He's been nominated for the Composer of the Year Juno award several times, including 1979 when Trooper won Group of The Year.

After Trooper was presented a Civic Recognition Award by the Mayor of Vancouver in 1980, Brian went on to do studio work in Los Angeles, Seattle and Vancouver throughout the eighties. In 1982 he played principal guitar on Randy Meisner's (The Eagles) first solo album.

Brian co-manages Trooper and is the co-owner of Great Pacific Records and P.O.P. Publishing. He's a current member of SOCAN, ACTRA, AVLA and the AFofM Local 145. He's contracted as an artist or songwriter with Universal Music, BMG Music, Warner Music, Great Pacific Records and Sony/ATV Publishing.

His many interests include boating (where he is most at peace), fishing, skiing and daily walking. Family plays a huge role in everything he has ever done. His three granddaughters are his inspiration for staying healthy and in good shape, and Joanne, his wife of more than 40 years, has stayed by his side through the good times and the bad.
